"Lessons in Chemistry" Director Tara Miele

Interview with filmmakers Tara Miele, Producer Red Flags, and Filmmakers Are Experimenting with AI

Happy Friday, Dear Listener!I kicked off the month of May by attending Runway's 2nd annual AI Film Festival at the Orpheum here in LA. Runway AI is a platform that combines machine learning with art and design. The first year, the festival received about 300 short-film submissions. A year later, submissions were over 3,000 and we got to see the work from 10 finalists. IndieWire's editor in chief Dana Harris-Bridson moderated an engaging and informative conversation with artists and filmmakers who have embraced AI into their workflow. While the shorts were visually captivating, it solidified that generative AI has a long way to go before it can replace storytelling. Without narrative, it's just very cool experimental art. One of my biggest takeaways is that AI can help filmmakers with process in a whole new way. AI allows creatives to ideate on new ideas and quickly experiment with things that otherwise might have seemed too ambitious or too expensive. Filmmakers can fail quickly and adjust their ideas before sharing it with others. AI will also help democratize storytelling. Imagine what worlds we will discover from underrepresented voices who have an inexpensive tool at their fingertips? I find that exciting.I know there continues to be a lot of fear in our community around AI. I get that. I still remain apprehensive, but as equally curious.I encourage everyone, especially producers, to learn as much as they can because these tools WILL change the way filmmakers work. The sooner we understand it ourselves, the sooner we can guide artists on it's possibilities and it's limitations. This is how we don't get "left behind."Thanks for listening, for being a part of my journey, and for doing this life thing with me!
