4 Year Anniversary
Celebrating 4 Years of AOP with the Inspirational Writer/Producer Gabby Lugo!
Happy Monday, Dear Listener!
You may have noticed my absence. Most of my June was spent out and about at high octane film festivals such as LALLIF, Tribeca and Palm Springs Shorts. It's been wonderful to see how many exciting filmmakers are coming up! Like Julio Torres and his quirky directorial debut Problemista which co-stars Tilda Swinton and perfectly captures the insanity of the visa application process. And, even though we've yet to meet, I'm very proud of fellow Brazilian filmmaker Guto Parente. His film, A Strange Path, won Best International Narrative Feature at Tribeca!
ALSO.
This week marks a milestone as we celebrate 4 years of AOP! Can you believe it?! I often talk about starting where you are and with what you have. This show is a perfect example of that.
Nothing in my path was ever handed to me. What I lacked in access, network or experience, I made up for in my curiosity, dedication and perseverance. The podcast was created because I felt alone in my journey and imagined many did as well. I wondered how others did it and still do it, especially women. How do they withstand the trials and tribulations of this industry while still showing up time and time again to carve out admirable and long lasting careers?
Four years and almost 90 episodes later, I’m insanely proud to have been a conduit for these time capsule conversations that I'm honored to have shared with you.
I'm humbled that the show has provided so much value for many. The fact that you keep tuning in sometimes still feels wild and preposterous at times as I’m certainly no expert; I'm just a girl, standing here, reminding you that while the path can often feel lonely, you are not alone.
Thanks for listening, for being a part of my journey, and for doing this life thing with me!
HIGHLIGHT EPISODE
Delighted to share my chat with the inspiring writer/producer Gabby Lugo. We met at a networking event, were quickly magnetized to each other and bonded over the various parallels in our paths.
Talking to Gabby felt like talking to a mirror, at times. After finding major success as a line producer on projects like the short for Damien Chazelle’s film Whiplash and the hit Palm Springs, she was faced with making a decision that would have most creatives shaking in their boots:
Should she continue on the lucrative line producing path, or turn down her financial safety net and pursue her true passion for writing?
In this episode, you'll get the real-real on how Gabby navigated the high stress and high stakes of a journey that begins with immigration from Nicaragua and arrives to present day with the recently-sold reboot of 16 Candles alongside powerhouse Latinas, showrunner Tanya Saracho and the one and only Selena Gomez. Spoiler Alert: Gabby’s writing it.
PRODUCER’S CORNER
These brilliant entrepreneurs and business leaders share their 4 secrets on how to build — and nurture — professional and personal networks.
From the best-selling author of Think Again and Originals, this book helps inform why our interactions with others hold the key to success. I'm in the middle of devouring it in my efforts to be a better leader and collaborator. Read along with me!
Do yourself a favor and run to theaters to catch this wild, fun, and perfectly inappropriate rated R comedy. Adele Lim beautiful directs this rockstar cast in a raunchy comedy with heart. It was a breath of fresh air to see women as flawed three-dimensional beings.

WOMPS
It was a bumpy road to learn how to work with carnets when traveling gear internationally to a high risk country.
