Indie Producers Are NOT the AMPTP

Strike Updates and Why BOTTOMS Will Inspire You

Happy Friday, Dear Listener!

Thrilled to start this newsletter and end this week on such a high as are collectively relieved the WGA and the AMPTP finally reached a deal. It only took 146 days of a strike, for the studios to come to their senses! Bananas.

In between rejoicing and celebrating, I found myself wondering what impact, if any, this new contract will have on my fellow indie producers? It compelled me to bring you this week's episode. Scroll down for more.

How are you? What's shaking in your world? All is well over here. October, my favorite month, is almost upon us. I'm still in production on the doc and will get to experience autumn in NY for a few weeks while filming...so dreamy. 🍂🍁

I truly love getting to be a conduit for these conversations and sharing them with you. It's a privilege to capture the wisdom of some of the most brilliant minds of our industry. It's been a slow summer for new episodes, but planning to bring you a few more before 2023 ends. And hey, if the show brings you value, I hope you'll consider supporting this labor of love by buying me a coffee☕☕☕

Thanks for listening, for being a part of my journey, and for doing this life thing with me!

HIGHLIGHT EPISODE

Last month, producers Laura Lewis and Brent Emery were interviewed by IndieWire on what role producers play in the AMPTP. Laura is the CEO and Founder of Rebelle Media and if her name seems familiar to you, it may be because she was on the show back in December 2021. (Check out her episode) Brent is a Sundance award-winning producer with 20+ years of international film strategy and business consulting experience. He’s currently a Partner at Resonate Entertainment. Both are impressive humans with  impressive resumes and credits. After reading this article, I invited them on the show to explore why there's a Change.Org petition floating around to remove that second “P” from the acronym entirely and why there's a desperate need for the Producers Union, which is currently 300 members strong.Fun Facts:

  • The PGA is a non-profit trade organization that does not have collective bargaining power, despite a long history of lawsuits and lobbying in an effort to be recognized.

  • No independent producer had a seat at the table or was involved in ANY of the negotiations with any of the unions this past summer.

Hollywood has changed tremendously in the last 50 years. Labor unions have forced studios to keep up with the times and protected the interest of its members. Indie producers have no protections. It’s time to change that. Join us as we delve into the nitty gritty of the AMPTP and dissect why it's been so difficult for producers to unionize.

PRODUCERS CORNER

The Latino market continues to be overlooked and it's costing the US $3.2 Trillion.

Very late to the party but I inhaled this book. It's the kind of novel I wish I could have been at the very front of the line to option and adapt into a beautiful film.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have read before.
