Deniese Davis and Producing with Issa Rae

On self care, finessing her hustle, and why she is sensitive about the producer title.

“How do we as producers, as people in this industry, try to push for more inclusive content, push to work with more inclusive talent, if the barriers of entry, the powers that be, don’t change?” - Deniese Davis

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

This week on the show I sat down with the hella amazing Deniese Davisproducer AND the COO/co-founder of ColorCreative, a production company she started with Issa Rae that focuses on underrepresented voices. Deniese was born and raised in the blue collar work force of Las Vegas.

She knew from a very young age, 16, to be exact, that she wanted to be a producer. Since no real entertainment industry existed in Vegas, she enrolled in AFI’s Producing Program and packed her bags for Los Angeles.

After graduating, she earned her stripes working as a freelance line producer, working on MANY shoots with budgets under $100k. It is no small feat and speaks volumes to her work ethic and determination.

The stars eventually aligned and she crossed paths with the equally as hardworking and ambitious Issa Rae. Together, they brought The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl to life.

The show was a smash on YouTube and eventually became the blueprint for INSECURE on HBO, a hilarious comedy about female friendships, growing up, and finding your way.

It’s one of the few shows I personally love and always make the time to watch. It is now gearing up for it’s 4th season. Viewing party at my place, y'all!! Hella inspiring.

During our time together, we discuss why it’s important to take time to re-calibrate and reset your soul, why she is sensitive about the producer title, and how she finessed her hustle.

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this week’s episode!
