"The mistake I’ve made in the last couple of years is not caring enough about the projects I’ve chosen.” -M. Elizabeth Hughes

‘Happy Tuesday, everyone!

Usually, the guests who come on I am meeting for the very first time when we sit to record. Some, however, I've known professionally and personally for many years. M. Elizabeth Hughes is one of those people.

We've done 3 movies, 2 pilot presentations, and consumed copious amounts of wine together since meeting in 2015. Although we also share a birthday, (Nov 21st!, our paths into producing could not have been more different. Elizabeth grew up in south Georgia and after graduating magna cum laude from Wesleyan College, she moved to LA and earned her M.F.A. in Film and Television Producing from Chapman University.

Since then, she has made her career producing a wide variety of films and series with various filmmakers and financiers. She co-produced one of my favorite all time movies, SHORT TERM 12. She’s produced many studio features such as GIRLFRIEND’S DAY written by and starring Bob Odenkirk and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY starring Ben Schwartz and Noël Wells.

Most recently, she produced the Amazon docuseries, LORENA, which reframes the infamous story surrounding Lorena Bobbitt.

During our chat, we take an unfiltered look into the challenges of working in physical production, the magic of making SHORT TERM 12, and dive deep into the choices that got her to where she is today.
