Short Film Budgeting Workshop

Happy Hump Day!

Just got back from my first SXSW and wow—what a whirlwind!

I spent my first day being overwhelmed and looking for a place to charge my phone. Between the films, the panels, the music spilling out of every doorway, and the conversations that pulled me in a hundred different directions, I barely had time to catch my breath. But somehow found time for all the free drinks?

I loved discovering that there’s thousands of Brazilians in Austin. It’s a mafia I tell ya! A highlight was getting to deepen relationships with folks I care about. Oh, and recording an episode with two producers who had films premiering there.

I'm already making mental notes for next year—comfortable shoes, portable charger, and a game plan that includes scheduled downtime (cute, right!). If you've been on the fence about checking it out, consider going next year. It's chaotic and exhausting and absolutely worth experiencing at least once.

Keeping this short and sweet so we can get to the workshop I’m excited to teach next month. Details below.

As always, thanks for doing this life thing with me!

WORKSHOP: BUDGETING FOR CREATIVES

After producing award-winning projects on tight budgets for over a decade, I know a thing or two about going from script to screen. Creating an accurate, workable budget is a crucial step in the filmmaking process, so why not share my process with all of you?

This workshop will teach you how to read your scripts like a producer. Practical budgeting framework specifically designed for creatives—writers, directors, actors, and of course, producers….anyone who thinks in shots, not spreadsheets.

Join me for a two-session virtual workshop where we will break down a short film script together and build a budget on Saturation, a new budgeting platform.

What script will we work from, you ask? Yours! Participants have the option to submit short film scripts no longer than 15 pages via Wscripted, a platform that helps producers source great scripts, for the chance to be workshopped by me and read by your peers.

Submissions will be reviewed by team AOP, and one lucky participant will walk away with a completed budget.

Unlike other Zoom workshops, you will not sit passively while I share my screen.

Boring!

We learn by doing and I want to empower you to understand the basics of script to screen execution.

Forty-eight hours later, we will gather for session 2, where you’ll probably marvel at the newfound respect you have for line producers. And I’ll reply with “Say it louder for the people in the back!”

We will compare your budget against mine, line by line, and you’ll be privy to how my brain makes certain decisions. You’ll have access to over a decade of budgeting insight. Can your AI do that?

Truly, my aim is to show you that every part of the process is sexy and can be fun. Knowledge is power, so regardless of whether or not you want to pursue a career as a line producer/producer, you’ll be a much better creative and collaborator as a result.

Early Bird Pricing (Until 3/17): $75 + additional $25 fee if submitting a script for consideration

Regular Pricing: $100 + additional $25 fee if submitting a script for consideration

Workshop is limited to 100 people.

In partnership with Saturation and Wscripted.
