Christine Vachon On Sustaining Relationships and Focusing on Possibility🎙
Happy August, Dear Reader!
Where have I been? I know, right. I got swept up into back-to-back shoots since March and finally came up for air last week, so here I am again in your inbox. How has these months been for you?
Seems like production is back with a vengeance. Every town is insanely busy!I just rooted back in LA after having the good fortunate of living in Atlanta for the past 3 months producing HONK FOR JESUS, SAVE YOUR SOUL, a mockumentary style film written and directed by Adamma Ebo.
It stars Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown as a husband and wife team behind a prominent Southern Baptist Mega Church who attempt to rebuild their congregation amidst a personal scandal. It was a true delight to be a part of the producing team. Adamma and Adanne Ebo, or as we affectionately call them, the Ebo Twins, are stars on the rise. Keep your eyes peeled.
While on production, I managed to release a few episodes thanks to the support Rebecca, Michelle, and Kalli, my ninjas behind the scenes.
Upcoming episodes include:
Veronica Beach - Head of Production at Pereira O’Dell
Kelly Funke - TV Producer of "Dr. Death"
Julie Lynn and Bonnie Curtis - Producers at Mockingbird Pictures

HIGHLIGHT EPISODE
"Disruption brings opportunity, even while it destroys some, it brings some. Figuring out your way through defining that opportunity is almost like a whole other layer.” - Christine Vachon
Christine Vachon, a living legend of the independent film scene. Killer Films, which she co-founded with Pamela Koffler, has produced over 100 films, including some of the most celebrated American indie features such as:
Carol (nominated for six Academy Awards)
Far from Heaven (nominated for four Academy Awards)
Still Alice (Academy Award winner)
Boys Don’t Cry (Academy Award winner)
One Hour Photo
KIDS
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
I’m Not There (Academy Award nominee)
Christine's highly lauded career spans 30+ years and she continues to churn out zeitgeist shifting films at every turn, such Janicza Bravo's A24 summer release ZOLA. The film follows a stripper named Zola (played by Taylour Paige) as she embarks on a wild road trip to Florida.
A self-proclaimed pragmatist, opportunist, and hustler, Christine possesses the special alchemy of an inherent producer.
In this very special episode we discuss:
Her enduring relationships with partner Pamela Koffler and director Todd Haynes
How to sustain a life as an independent producer
The importance of not dwelling on the “what could have beens” but to focus on “what could be’s.”
PRODUCER'S CORNER
China’s Women Filmmakers Are Embracing Their Stories. Moviegoers Are Loving It. China is the largest film market in the world. Female directors are finding runaway success with their subtle and anthropological approach to film.
The two films noted for their surprise success, “Hi, Mom” and “Sister,” are part of a wave of movies made by female directors that are challenging the notion of what it takes to conquer China’s vaunted film market — now the world’s largest.
And while each film is distinct, together they stand out for what they represent: a rejection of the one-dimensional female roles.

For my fellow wine lovers. Coly Den Haan set her wine shop apart from other L.A. spots by choosing to only carry wine that had at least one woman involved in the production. By focusing on exclusively selling wine made by women, her Silver Lake shop—which also carries a wide selection of natural wines—not only carries a unique range of bottles but also supports other women-backed businesses. Vinovore also offers virtual wine tasting and custom gift boxes.
